Championship Meet entries due this week

This email contains a huge amount of information so please read through it carefully as it applies to every swimmer. If you have any questions please contact the coaches

At the end of every summer season our league (SSL) holds multiple championship meets. Every swimmer regardless of age or experience is eligible to participate in a championship meet. Most swimmers will participate in" B Champs", held here at our home pool on Saturday, July 21st. Swimmers can choose which events they would like to swim. They may choose up to 3 individual events and are placed in heats with other swimmers who have similar seed times. Swimmers will also participate in relays. This is a very fun meet to swim and swimmers often have some of their greatest successes at B Champs.

It is imperative that the coaches have attendance responses for every child on the team -- we cannot stress this enough. These entries are locked in with the league when the coaches submit them this Friday the 13th. So even if your child cannot attend a championship meet we need a response by Thursday noon so we can send out the entries for your proofreading and corrections.

In addition to being a fantastic fun morning at the pool, B Champs is a major fundraiser for our team. As hosts for B Champs on Saturday morning July 21st, the team needs EVERY family to volunteer to help in some way, even if your child is not swimming in the meet. Each family must volunteer for at least one job; jobs are divided into time periods, which means you are only volunteering for a short period of time, not the whole meet. Check out the sign-up with job descriptions, there is a greater variety of volunteer jobs at Champs than there is at a regular meet.
This next part can be confusing so new families especially please ask us for clarification if you need it.
If your swimmer does not have an "A" qualifying time, you should enroll them for up to three B Champs Individual events of their choice, they will also swim in a relay or two. (Coaches may also ask if swimmers are available for an A Champs relay the following week even if they do not have an individual A time). Once a swimmer has an A Champs qualifying time in a stroke, he or she can only swim that stroke at A Champs and is not eligible to swim that stroke at B Champs. Swimmers can participate in both A and B Champs provided they are swimming different strokes/events consistent with their qualifying times.
For swimmers with qualifying times (see the list of names at the end of this message) there is also a week of championship meets which includes a Distance Freestyle meet, an Individual Medley meet and a standard event meet "A Champs". I have attached the the A Champs qualifying lists both in meters and yards. The League website has a list of the top 40 swimmer times in each event this season so far, dual and tri-meet results can be found on our swimtopia site. If you think your swimmer may be close to an A Champs time you will find it there.
The A Champs Individual Medley (IM) meet is Wednesday July 25th and includes 100 IMs for 8s and 10s and 200 IMs for all other age groups. The Distance Freestyle is Monday July 23rd and includes 100 meter Freestyle for 8s, 200m for 10s and 12s, and 400m for everyone else. Each swimmer with qualifying times can swim up to 4 events individually, but at least one of those events must be either the IM or Distance Free in addition to their other events. If a swimmer does not qualify in the IM or Distance Free then they can still swim up to 3 events individually. If you think your child would like to swim either the IM or distance event, please let Dave or Kelly know so they can do a time trial in practice this week and make sure they would be under the qualifying time.
At both A and B champs we may only submit one of each type of relay per age group, those line-ups will be determined by the coaches so you do not need to worry about listing relays in your preferences. However, if your child usually swims relays at either the JV or Varsity meets please be sure to tell Coach Dave their availability for BOTH A and B champs in the notes section when you declare availability (as shown here).

We like to get as many relays as possible to A Champs but we are aware it is a full week later and some families may not be available.
Swimmers can qualify for A Champs up until the last JV and Varsity meets of the season and there are several people who are very close to the qualifying times. The times can be made at either a JV or Varsity meet, so if your swimmer can make the JV meet next week, then he or she has an extra chance at making the A Champs time standard (attached). If your swimmer wants to attempt the A Champs time in a particular event please let Dave know so he can be sure to put him or her in that event at an earlier meet. If your swimmer selects a B Champs event, for example 50 yard backstroke, and then next week makes the A Champs time, the League will automatically move that swimmer's champs entry for backstroke to the A Champs meet. The League does not allow a swimmer to add a different stroke after entries have been submitted even with new times, but athletes may change from B to A in the same stroke.
Again, here is what is needed from each parent BY THURSDAY Noon: the events that your children want to swim at B Champs (July 21st at PSC home) and/or A Champs (Distance free is July 23rd, IM is July 25th, & all other A events are the 28th). Please use the meet sign-up calendar to provide this information. Even if your swimmer cannot make either champs meet, please declare that on the signups so their names are not submitted to the League line-up. Telling the coaches in person is acceptable only if you follow up with an email as well. It is important that we get this selection process done promptly so you can have time to check over the entries to make sure there are no mistakes. The finalized version of the events will be sent out once Dave has them all.
If you have any questions please feel free to ask. Thanks.
